Seven steps to a successful sale
Take them in order: each one makes the next easier.
Quick checklist before you post
- A clean, tidy car
- Many bright photos, faults included
- A price checked against similar listings
- A complete, honest description
- The documents ready
- Notifications turned on
Be wary if the buyer…
- wants to pay more than the price and asks for the difference back
- would send a courier for the car, unseen
- asks you for a deposit or a “shipping fee”
- rushes you and will not meet in person
Do not go ahead in that case. Never put your exact address in the listing.
- Step 1
Get the car ready
The first impression decides who writes to you. A thorough clean inside and out, a fresh interior and the small fixes done are worth more than any description.
- Wash it, and vacuum the interior and the boot
- Have the cheap faults fixed: a bulb, a wiper, a small scratch
- Take out your belongings, the roof rack and the stickers
- Step 2
Take photos like a pro
Buyers look at the photos first. Many sharp, bright pictures build trust and filter out those who are only curious.
- Shoot in soft daylight — an overcast day or early evening is best
- Make the first picture a three-quarter view from the front
- Show the interior, the dashboard with the mileage, and the tyres too
- Photograph the faults as well: a buyer who has seen them will not haggle over them
- Step 3
Price it wisely
Too high scares buyers away, too low makes them suspicious. See what similar cars are listed for on the marketplace.
- Look for listings of the same make, model and year with similar mileage
- The equipment and the service history are part of the price
- Leave a little room to negotiate, if you are open to it
- Step 4
Write an honest, complete description
A good description answers questions before they are asked. Fewer pointless calls, and more people who come to see it.
- Describe the service history, the number of owners and the last major repairs
- Highlight the key equipment — you can pick it out in the listing too
- Mention the faults you know about: honesty is the fastest way to trust
- Step 5
Have the paperwork at hand
A buyer who sees every document at the viewing decides sooner. Get them ready in advance so nothing holds up the deal.
- Registration certificate and title document
- Service book and invoices for major repairs
- A valid roadworthiness test, the keys and the spare key
- A sales contract filled in beforehand, in two copies
- Step 6
Reply quickly
Interest cools fast. A buyer who gets an answer the same day comes to see the car; one who waits days has found another by then.
- Turn on notifications and check your messages every day
- Agree on a specific time for the viewing
- Once it is sold, mark it sold so nobody keeps asking
- Step 7
Hand it over safely
Most fraud happens at the end, at payment. A few simple rules keep you and the buyer at ease.
- Meet in daylight, somewhere busy, and not alone
- Before a test drive, check the buyer’s licence, and ride along
- Hand over the keys and papers only once the payment is with you
- Report the sale within the legal deadline, at a government office or online
